Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him stunned and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
