Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
