Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of characters who will separate from the main group to embark on their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, intertwining the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

First, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a individual motive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in the region and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as important members in House Halovar could help the party reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This results in them little choice but to head to the northern region in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

According to the recent installment’s post-show segment, we discover that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.

Viewers can anticipate discovering which characters will be where in the season’s concluding setup installment, released on next week.
